WWE Diva division in best shape ever!

What a difference a year makes.

After #GiveDivasAChance, which trended in February of 2015, high-lighted how the WWE Universe’s overwhelmingly negative attitude toward the women’s division, the Big Fed has turned an important corner.

Heading into the 2016 Fastlane pay-per-view, WWE’s female roster is the largest and most talented in nearly a decade. Increased air time devoted to the Divas, as well as multiple story-lines and programs within the division are promising signs for the future of women’s wrestling on the big stage.

NXT proves simplicity works

As this week in wrestling draws to a close, WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs and NXT Takeover: London are both in the bag.

Put side by side, one can see exactly how the shows differ. Putting aside variables such as attendance, production value and star power, a large difference between shows was in the construction of storylines.

Charlotte turning heel good move for division & character

Ric Flair earned himself the title “the dirtiest player in the game” for his heelish antics, and it appears his daughter, WWE Divas Champion Charlotte, is aspiring to follow in his footsteps.

This past Monday on Raw, Becky Lynch challenged best friend Charlotte to a good-natured contest. Charlotte hesitated at the prospect at first, but then conceded. They locked up while two-time Hall of Famer Ric Flair looked on at ringside.

Women’s division center stage on NXT

Women’s wrestling once again reigned supremeĀ at Full Sail University, with three single’s matches featured on Wednesday’s NXT television program.

Fan-favourite veteran Carmella challenged the juggernaut Nia Jax. Emma continued putting over her new conceded, heelish ways in a match against development talent. To close the show, Bayley defended her NXT Women’s Championship against number one contender, Alexa Bliss, but was then met with a new challenge.

Iron Women: WWE elevates themselves with classy showing at NXT Takeover

“Respect” was the theme of the evening, and The Big Fed’s success at driving it home was largely due to a world-class showing from Woman’s Champion Bayley and challenging former champ Sasha Banks.

The two competitors met in a thirty-minute iron woman match, an attraction never before featured in WWE. More importantly, the match was featured in the card’s main event. For the first time since its humble beginnings, the world’s leader in sports entertainment featured women in their head-line attraction.

It was an important night, and it felt like everyone, from the roster wrestling on the card to the announce team to the fans at Full Sail University, understood that importance. NXT Takeover: Respect was not just another live event pushed to boost network ratings or sell tickets, it was a chance to make history.

The theme of respect was not relegated to the main event, though. It permeated nearly every contest.
