Predictions and projections for 2016

It’s the time of year for review and resolution. It’s a time to take a look back at the year that’s gone by and in doing so appreciate the present.

What’s next is to look ahead at 2016. Which superstars will stand out, excel and achieve greatness? Which wrestlers will fall short of potential?

Worst… Raw… ever?

The Monday Night Raw which aired 24 hours after Survivor Series, which is already being hailed as the worst pay-per-view offering of the year, received its lowest ratings since WWF was on the losing end of the Monday Night Wars.

Dave Meltzer from the Wrestling Observer reports that with 3.19 million viewers during its first hour, 2.99 million in its second, and 2.71 million in its final hour, November 24th was the first time Raw has averaged less than 3 million viewers since 1997.

Why was the show’s audience showing so dismal?

T.M.Z. BLOWS COVER ON LANA AND RUSEV! – Kayfabe in the age of social media

On Sunday, October 11th, TMZ broke the story that WWE superstars Rusev and Lana are engaged, and have been for a month.

Fantastic news for the happy couple, everyone at The Daily Jobber wishes them well in life and in love.

However, having the story publicized as widely as it was has thrown a wrench in the gears of the story-line in which Lana and Rusev’s characters are currently involved. Namely, they hate each other’s guts after their relationship dissolved months ago, Lana is hot for Dolph Ziggler, and Summer Rae is wanting to marry the Bulgarian.

What WWE should do with Lana’s character

Since bitterly dissolving her partnership with Rusev after Extreme Rules, the Ravishing Russian Lana has been a manager without a meal-ticket. Since then, she has seemingly decided that managing isn’t really her thing and that she’s much more of a fun-loving romantic at heart, finding herself irresistibly attracted to fellow golden-haired beach body,¬†Dolph Ziggler.

The paradigm shift has been a significant demotion, one disappointing to fans of Lana’s original gimmick.

One Step Back: the Lana/Ziggler segment from Raw represents story-telling which is not only lazy but offensive.

On Monday Night Raw, I watched some of the most stilted, contrived, clunky, lazy story-telling I have seen in a while.

No, I am not referring to the sudden baby-face turns made by both The Bellas and Cesaro, Tyson Kidd & Natalya, despite them changing absolutely nothing about their in-ring style, promos, entrances, etc.

I am not alluding to the unexplained reunion of Erick Rowan and Luke Harper, which follows a similarly unexplained falling out which never culminated in any kind of feud between the two.

I’m not even talking about the sudden rivalry between Ryback and Bray Wyatt, or the inclusion of R-Truth in the Elimination Chamber match, or the inclusion of any other entrant in the Chamber match without any clear system of selection- no lottery, no qualifying matches, nothing.

One could point to any of these as prime examples of hollow narrative worthy of a spirited rant, but what really has me offended is what the WWE creative team has conceived for Lana.

WWE Thursday Night Smackdown – May 14th, 2015

The go-home edition of the blue brand beams into living rooms around America and through my computer monitor in Vancouver, as we get set for the final stop before WWE Payback.

WWE-Smackdown-Logo.0

With some of the bigger name talent taking the night off (Randy Orton, John Cena, Dolph Ziggler, The Bellas), the rest of the roster trade partners for a night as they try their best to hype every feud on the upcoming card. A surprisingly uncomplicated night, with an absence of run-ins, interference, shmozzes, or last minute stipulations. The focus was on competitive in-ring action – of which there was plenty, and on the subtle relationships between single superstars.

WWE Thursday Night SmackDown – April 23rd, 2015

The fed’s blue brand comes to us live from Providence, Rhode Island. It is the last smacking of the down before Extreme Rules Pay-Per-View on Sunday in Chicago… I guess we should make some predictions…

WWE-Smackdown-Logo.0

Tonight’s episode features some strange combinations of superstars and feuds, as many key players were absent from the card. The Shield members come back together in the ring, Neville speaks, and the audience plays a few rounds of “Who Do We Cheer For?” as heels play face for the confused crowd.

Jobber Report: Raw Re-cap & Reactions, Groundhog Day, 2015

A week later and the storm seems to have passed. Whether I’m referring to the blizzard that had superstars and crew alike snowed in at WWE HQ where they were forced to cobble together a patchwork edition of Raw last week, or whether I’m referring to the raging whirlwind of negative responses many fans expressed after the Royal Rumble match, it can be fair to say both have stabilized.

Let’s get to this week’s Raw.
