Tag team scene heating up in NXT

When The Ascension and Lucha Dragons left WWE’s development ranks for the main roster in late 2014/early 2015, a void was left in NXT.

Fortunately, the Dusty Rhodes Classic put a new high-stakes focus on tag team wrestling, and many teams took the opportunity to make a distinct impression.

Since the Classic finals on October 7th, three teams in particular have been wowing the Full Sail crowd and showing their lust for a shot at the titles, currently held by massive fan favourites, The Vaudevillains.

Iron Women: WWE elevates themselves with classy showing at NXT Takeover

“Respect” was the theme of the evening, and The Big Fed’s success at driving it home was largely due to a world-class showing from Woman’s Champion Bayley and challenging former champ Sasha Banks.

The two competitors met in a thirty-minute iron woman match, an attraction never before featured in WWE. More importantly, the match was featured in the card’s main event. For the first time since its humble beginnings, the world’s leader in sports entertainment featured women in their head-line attraction.

It was an important night, and it felt like everyone, from the roster wrestling on the card to the announce team to the fans at Full Sail University, understood that importance. NXT Takeover: Respect was not just another live event pushed to boost network ratings or sell tickets, it was a chance to make history.

The theme of respect was not relegated to the main event, though. It permeated nearly every contest.

Baron Corbin: the anti-wrestler

Thomas Pestock started his wrestling career in 2012, and it took him a while before he found his footing. But when the Baron Corbin character was re-packaged and introduced in September of 2014, the NXT Universe really got behind him. His raw animal magnetism, his impressive physical size and his rebellious look earned him an instant following. Fans, especially the female ones, began exploding whenever his entrance music hit.

In the past months, however, a different crowd reaction has become palpably felt. When Corbin enters Full Sail University these days he is greeted with boos of disapproval, punctuated with jeering chants of “you can’t wrestle”. The once loving fans have turned on the tattooed outlaw.

Corbin currently finds himself at a crossroads in terms of character, and signs are beginning to emerge that he (and the company) are making the right moves to advance his progression as a performer.

Owens vs Balor: a fight less important than its fighters

The stage is set for a massive showdown. July 4th, 2015, for the first time ever, the WWE Network will stream live action from the Ryogoku Kokogikan in Sumida, Tokyo, Japan.

Although the card will feature appearances from stars Hideo Itami, Chris Jericho and John Cena, as well as Brock Lesnar’s first sanctioned match since his WWE World Heavyweight Championship title loss at WrestleMania XXXI, the bout that is sure to bring the house down is the NXT Championship match between indie legends Finn Balor and Kevin Owens.

This match has big fight feel written all over it. Both participants are fifteen-year veterans of the wrestling business. Both have amassed cult followings with their respective styles, which boast opposing attractors: Balor, the dynamic and dramatically masterful showman; and Owens, the hard-nosed and surprisingly complex expert of subtlety.

But for such an event of historic significance and epic measure, why has screen time and ring time between the two characters been so minimal? In comparison to past feuds, it has the feeling of being oddly disproportionate.

Who is winning the Wednesday Night Wars? Part Three: NXT

When NXT Wrestling first aired from 2010 to 2012, its format was akin to reality television, where rookies taken from WWE’s development promotion FCW (Florida Championship Wrestling) would compete in a series of challenges to earn a spot on the main roster.

in August 2012, WWE closed the doors on its Tampa, Florida development promotion. Moving to Full Sail University, a training facility in Winter Park, Florida, WWE re-branded the development promotion under the NXT banner. After that, the show did away with the reality show theme altogether, and became a Raw or Smackdown-like showcase for the developmental talent.

Although a number of current WWE superstars cut their teeth in NXT (most notably Seth Rollins, the first NXT grad to win the World Heavyweight Championship), it wasn’t until 2014 that NXT really started to get serious attention from audiences and industry analysts.

With three big live events under their belt, a touring schedule, and their current champion Kevin Owens making waves on the main roster, NXT is becoming a major force to be reckoned with.
