Crews screwed as Joe turns heel!

NXT brought a big fight feel to Wednesday night as number one contender Apollo Crews challenged Finn Balor for the NXT Championship.

After a solid match, the competitors were taking things home when out of nowhere came Baron Corbin, who took out Crews before turning his fury on the champ.

The crowd popped as Samoa Joe came down to make the save, and Corbin scarpered. A rude surprise however, as Joe turned on Balor. After delivering a series of punches and kicks and a gut-buster, Joe draped the championship belt across Balor’s chest and walked off to chants of “Why, Joe, why?”

Iron Women: WWE elevates themselves with classy showing at NXT Takeover

“Respect” was the theme of the evening, and The Big Fed’s success at driving it home was largely due to a world-class showing from Woman’s Champion Bayley and challenging former champ Sasha Banks.

The two competitors met in a thirty-minute iron woman match, an attraction never before featured in WWE. More importantly, the match was featured in the card’s main event. For the first time since its humble beginnings, the world’s leader in sports entertainment featured women in their head-line attraction.

It was an important night, and it felt like everyone, from the roster wrestling on the card to the announce team to the fans at Full Sail University, understood that importance. NXT Takeover: Respect was not just another live event pushed to boost network ratings or sell tickets, it was a chance to make history.

The theme of respect was not relegated to the main event, though. It permeated nearly every contest.

NXT Takeover: Brooklyn – High-lights, Low points & Crunchy in-betweens

Saturday, August 22nd, 2015: The Fed’s development brand, which is becoming less of a development brand by the week, put on its biggest, flashiest, most daring display yet. Taking the Takeover show for the first time out of the safe confines of Full Sail University, NXT brings the action to a raucous house of 15,000 enthusiastic fans in Brooklyn, NY.

Did the dramatic endeavour pay off for Triple H’s fledgling brand at a time when it seems on the verge of leaving the nest?

Would the stars deliver the goods to a tough New York audience known not only for it’s generosity of spirit, but also for its intolerance of bullshit?

What were the highs, lows and awkward middles? Let’s break it down…

Baron Corbin: the anti-wrestler

Thomas Pestock started his wrestling career in 2012, and it took him a while before he found his footing. But when the Baron Corbin character was re-packaged and introduced in September of 2014, the NXT Universe really got behind him. His raw animal magnetism, his impressive physical size and his rebellious look earned him an instant following. Fans, especially the female ones, began exploding whenever his entrance music hit.

In the past months, however, a different crowd reaction has become palpably felt. When Corbin enters Full Sail University these days he is greeted with boos of disapproval, punctuated with jeering chants of “you can’t wrestle”. The once loving fans have turned on the tattooed outlaw.

Corbin currently finds himself at a crossroads in terms of character, and signs are beginning to emerge that he (and the company) are making the right moves to advance his progression as a performer.

WWE NXT – April 15th, 2015

The men and women in development at Full Sail University went back to their regular program format after last week’s WrestleMania retrospective. Many performers, including the respective champions Kevin Owens and Sasha Banks, took the night off television.

This episode focused on pushing a new talent, feeding the tag team division’s main feud, introducing a new diva, and welcoming back Sami Zayn with a main event match against juggernaut Rhyno.

  • CJ Parker vs Solomon Crowe: Parker takes a more aggressive approach, harkening a character change. Crowe wins by submission.
  • Baron Corbin vs Steve Cutler: Corbin wins with End of Days.
  • Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady vs Angelo Dawkins & Sawyer Fulton: Blake and Murphy give flowers to Carmella during match. Enzo gets the pin after hitting the rocket launcher splash.
  • Alex Riley cuts promo from locker room on Kevin Owens.
  • Dana Brooke vs Blue Pants: Brooke wins by pinfall after hitting a sit-out Attitude Adjustment.
  • Sami Zayn vs Rhyno: After getting punished for the majority of the match, Zayn comes back and hits Helluvah Kick to get the pin and victory.

  • CJ Parker has left the ranks of NXT, but you would not have gotten that from this match. There was no send-off or farewell speech. Instead, Parker teased an attitude change but put over the new guy as usual despite controlling much of the action. Crowe gave a solid performance, selling quite well for Parker. The odd-ball hacker gimmick of Crowe’s is a bit lost on viewers. The brief spots of interference which were supposed to build up his entrance were lost on the audience and would have benefited from images and sound-bites from the character himself.
  • Baron Corbin, I am now convinced, cannot wrestle. His squash matches are not entertaining. If he does not become involved in a feud that will challenge him as a performer, he will stagnate very quickly.

  • Amore and Cassidy gave an entertaining match in their usual style. I worry sometimes they are too dependent on their gimmick, and it would be interesting to see them try a change. One criticism of this match: when Blake and Murphy came down to ringside to talk to Carmella, there was no reaction from her teammates. I am not convinced they simply were too busy with their opponents to notice the champs at all. The show of anger and jealousy after the action ended was much less effective than to have it play a distraction factor in the match.
  • Alex Riley is gunning for Kevin Owens.

  • Dana Brooke’s debut was tepid, but it got over her character and her strengths. Physically, she is a gifted athlete, and she will get heat as an arrogant, bully heel. There was some awkwardness at times, no doubt a result of nerves and inexperience. Her finisher was well executed, but would be more effective if it transitioned seamlessly into a pin. One other note from the match: KICK TO THE CROTCH! Everyone saw it, the crowd reacted, the announcers didn’t touch it. I feel conflicted about this…

  • Sami Zayn proved once again his emotional connection with the crowd. More than any other superstar he resonates with the people on a human level, and he works that sympathy into his matches to create compelling stories. Rhyno is a beneficial opponent for Zayn at this time in his career. For starters, he fights in the stiff and physical style shared by Kevin Owens, and a win here builds Zayn for a future rematch with his former friend. Also, Rhyno is a veteran of ECW and WWE, and puts Zayn over as a potential main roster talent.

The Jobber Run-Down: “This Week in Pro Wrestling” part two, NXT 04/03/2015

Full Sail University is still coasting off the buzz around February’s TakeOver: Rival as it goes to television Wednesday night.

The show opens with a vignette in which Kevin Owens tells us to forget about the past (by which he means Sami Zayn) and look to the future (“and that’s Finn Balor”). Cut to Finn as he says that he will face Kevin Owens “any place, any time,” – I suppose, as long as there’s also time to put on lots of make-up and do a five-minute ramp entrance first. Anyway, the drama involving Alex Riley is re-capped and I get stuck wondering whether or not I should care about Alex Riley.

GM William Regal puts the tough choice to Riley, who’s looking a bit like Eric Bischoff: be a wrestler or be a commentator, but you can’t do both. Riley makes a small noise with his mouth and leaves the room.
